SALARY

$4,964.72 – $5,564.72 monthly

WORK HOURS

Forty hour work-week. Normally, Monday through Friday, 8 AM – 5 PM. May require work on nights, weekends, and/or holidays.

SUMMARY

Be the assistant to the Sheriff and act on behalf of the Sheriff in relation to detention operations. Oversee the routine daily operations of the Detention Bureau of the Wichita County Sheriff’s Office. Perform administrative, management, and operational duties as required by the position.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED

This position reports to the Chief Deputy.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED

This position has supervisory responsibility over the entire Detention Bureau.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

To perform this job successfully, the individual will be able to:

  • Ensure that the Wichita County Jail complies with the rules of the Texas Commission on Jail Standards;
  • Represent the Sheriff’s Office on occasion;
  • Possess and continually demonstrate the ability to influence others to accomplish the detention bureau mission by providing purpose, direction, and motivation;
  • Oversee all Sheriff’s Office activity related to the detention bureau;
  • Research, suggest, and draft Detention Bureau policy and procedures;
  • Oversee Detention Bureau discipline;
  • Review citizen, employee, and inmate complaints;
  • Monitor vendor activity related to contracted jail services to ensure compliance and acceptable performance; and
  • Additional duties as assigned.

MANDATORY QUALIFICATIONS

  • Ten years of jail related experience,
  • Management experience,
  • A sound working knowledge of detention/corrections principles and techniques,
  • Knowledge or familiarity with court and/or other legal processes,
  • Available for call-out and to work extended hours when necessary,
  • People oriented,
  • Possess above average communication and writing skills,
  • Possess supervisory, management, and decision-making skills,
  • The individual must be able to demonstrate above average familiarity with Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Word.
  • Ability to perform additional duties as assigned.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATION

For this position, an individual must:

  • Have a valid Texas Driver’s License
  • Be currently licensed by TCLEOSE as a jailer

LANGUAGE SKILLS

This individual must possess the ability to communicate in the English language both orally and in writing. This individual must be able to read and comprehend complex instructions, correspondence, and memos. This individual must possess the ability to write complex correspondence and communicate complex, detailed ideas within the WCSO and to other local governmental agencies.

REASONING ABILITY

This person must be able to apply common sense and understanding in carrying out complex instructions. They must possess the ability to identify problems and independently develop solutions.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Physical demands of the position vary. The employee is regularly required to sit, stand, walk, and use fingers to handle and feel, reach with hands and arms; and to talk or hear. The individual may be required to climb or balance, bend, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, run, and climb. The individual will be regularly required to lift and/or move up to twenty (20) pounds and may occasionally lift and/or move up to 150 pounds. In order to meet the physical demands of the job the individual must have full use of extremities. The individual must be able to ascend and descend five flights of stairs.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

The work environment for this position varies. Typically the environment will be an office setting. The individual will be required to occasionally be in an environment where the risk of exposure to blood borne pathogens, and other health hazards require immunization against such exposure. This individual will be required to occasionally be in an environment with elevated levels of noise, fumes, and airborne particles.
