The Wichita County Sheriff’s Office provides the following as a service to citizens of Wichita County and all surrounding counties. The 68-A inspection is a Law Enforcement Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) Inspection for titling purposes or to determine if an assigned or re-assigned VIN is necessary for titling.
This is not a safety inspection, nor do we provide a weight scale.
In Texas, a VIN inspection is primarily needed for out-of-state vehicles, vehicles without a title, and homemade vehicles to ensure the VIN corresponds to the actual vehicle. This inspection, often conducted by a law enforcement officer on a Form VTR-68-A, prevents fraud, ensures vehicle legitimacy, and is a crucial step for obtaining a Texas title.
Specific Situations Requiring a VIN Verification
- Out-of-State Vehicles: If you are a Texas resident bringing in a vehicle from another state, a Texas-certified inspection is required.
- Vehicles with No Previous Title: For vehicles that have never been titled or registered in Texas, an inspection by a law enforcement auto theft investigator is necessary.
- Bonded Titles: You must have a VIN inspection to obtain a bonded title, a process for vehicles that are missing a title.
- Homemade Trailers: To register a homemade trailer in Texas, a VIN inspection is also required.
- Vehicles Imported from Other Countries: A VIN inspection is needed to verify that the vehicle is the correct one for titling.
Inspections will be conducted on the second Wednesday of each month at 8:00 am until 11:00 am. Inspections are by appointment only with a limited number of appointments each inspection day. Inspection location is detailed below.
